And just like that it's game week two!
FYI: Live league can be found here: https://www.wotnw.com/the-league
After the players not being able to contain themselves last week and pumping out multiple games each, this week things started to settle down. The match ups included some less often used commanders, but also some quite powerful ones, *looking at you Donal*.
This week I've just stuck this handy table at the top so that you don't have to read all the words I've written and instead can just look at the scores/lists on stats via the link - you'll be missing out on some good memes but that's your choice I suppose.
The current league standings look quite tasty, with big upset to the 'meta' of last week being Rays Baratheons beating out Cols Nights Watch on a single failed charge, click here to read that.
Match one this week had Dale looking for his first league win against Jamie our newest member. Playing a Game of Thrones, The Blackfish vs Gregor Clegane. The Blackfish's archers made easy work of the Mountains Men from distance, but they where soon to heal up and come very close to removing the She Bears from the table in a later rounds.
Whilst the Stark paid Hedge Knights and Sworn Swords pinned in Knights of Castly Rock on the right flank and this allowed more Stark archer shooting and some face smashing Berzerkers to finish off the Bolton cutthroats. The cavalry duel in the right resolved in stark favour and the she bears finally finished off the Mountain, seeing the game end 14-1.
Dale summed the game up with this like this "I do not like Lannister supremacy." which I've visualised below.
Overall Jamie gave as good as he Dales rolls, the up hill commander struggle and the fact that this was only his fourth (ish) ever game meant the outcome was something we should have put money on.
Brian and I locked our lists in early to enable a good bit of smack talking on the group chat but I don't think either of us expected to get the match we got, what a cracker. Probably the best game I've played in so far. Vargo Hoat vs Theon Greyjoy, Fire and Blood, seeing the initial deployment I was convinced that I was never going to be in the game, only to take a huge early lead. I'll let you read the rest on Brians Blog, but I'll leave this image here because you can clearly see the moment my heart ripped in half.
Whilst Brian and I where playing the game of the year, Dale was playing yet another league game this time against Andy, Ned vs Greyworm. With a lack of photos from the Wardens this week I've stolen these snaps from Brian's blog - thanks :)
Dale reports live from table 2 "A Clash of Kings saw a cagey opening, the Tully sworn shields seize the centre and weather a storm(crow) of arrows, only to be pushed off by the inexorable advance of Daario's Pikemen. Targ Blackguards seized a flank, while Stark Bastard's Girls punched through the opposite side, mauling the Dothraki outriders and Ser Friendzone. A unit of Sworn Swords perished attempting to push the Blackguards off their objective, whilst the Pike block held the centre with some clever heals despite Stark arrows. Poor noble Ned finally charged the Pike and died in a suicidal charge against the now-heavily buffed unsullied." Greyworm 12, Ned 3.
After which for a brief fleeting moment the league looked like this:
With Dale sitting pretty at the top, he felt like Icarus soaring above the rest of us, but like Icarus' Wings Dales spreadsheet entries were too made of wax and melted away once he realised that he'd forgotten how to type numbers into a box. Once he fixed his data entry issues he tumbled back down to ultimately finishing the week in second place.
Two time trophy winner took on two time player Jamie, a Donal Noye, vs Jamie Lannister dance. Unfortunately for Jamie the outcome was always going to be a foregone conclusion here with him being so new to the game, but the upshot was that he got two games in one night, with Col following up the league game with a practice match to run through the finer points. Fair play to Jamie here for jumping in on the League so early on in his Song journey - every credit.
They kicked things off on Thursday with A Dance of Dragons, and Col sent through this tidy summary - Both armies squared off to face each other but with the Knights of Castly Rock out on one flank and the outriders lead by Coldhands ready to outflank. The Nights Watch grabbed at 2 objectives and swiftly pulled back. Coldhands and his outriders appeared and smashed Commander Jamie in the rear, killing him where he stood. The Knights of Castly Rock where too far away to help and as points went to the Nights Watch. 3-11 to the Nights Watch.
Game week two's results saw no real shockers, but some excellent games. Much was leant and much was lost. I really enjoyed playing Theon commander his cards allowed some fantastic movement options. Running him in Ironmakers with Wendamyr meant I could move 9" before rolling charge dice, hitting on 3's and saving on 2's, which lead for some very nice charges and diversion tactics is just a fantastic card. It's unlikely I'd have taken him seriously if it were not for the leagues format - I'll defo be running him again soon.
The table now stands like this with Greggers still not bothering to turn up for his own league.
If you've made it this far, thanks for reading, and don't forget you can follow along live on www.wotnw.com
